Sundress Academy for the Arts Announces Winners
of Summer Residency Scholarships
The Sundress Academy for the Arts (SAFTA) is pleased to announce Brionne Janae and Carlina Duan as the winners of summer residency scholarships for writers of color. These scholarships are designed to give artists of color time and space to complete their creative projects in a quiet and productive environment.
Brionne Janae is a California native, poet and teaching artist living in Brooklyn. She is the recipient of the 2016 St. Botoloph Emering Artist award, a Hedgebrook and Vermont Studio Center Alumni and proud Cave Canem Fellow. Her poetry and prose have been published in, The American Poetry Review, Rattle, Bitch Magazine, The Cincinnati Review, jubilat, Sixth Finch, Plume, Bayou Magazine, The Nashville Review, and Waxwing, among others. Brionne’s first full-length collection of poetry is titled After Jubilee.
Carlina Duan is a poet with a sweet tooth, who hails from Michigan. Her first poetry collection, I Wore My Blackest Hair, was published by Little A in 2017. Carlina’s work has also appeared in Tupelo Quarterly, Narrative Magazine, The Margins, and HEArt Journal, among others. She currently lives in Nashville, where she is an MFA Candidate in Poetry at Vanderbilt University.
Finalists for this year’s scholarships include Keith S. Wilson, Noel Quiñones, and Rachel Ronquillo Gray.
