The Wardrobe

As part of our ongoing commitment to female-identified and genderqueer authors, Sundress Publications is accepting submissions for a new feature called The Wardrobe. Each month, we will present a list of all participating authors and presses, and once a week, our editors will promote a single author, reprinting a selection of work from her published collection. Think of it as a kind of “Best Dressed” feature, but without all the tabloid snark.

Guidelines

  1. The Wardrobe is for women writers only. Please note that for our purposes, “women” includes cisgender, transgender, transsexual, genderqueer, and female-identified individuals.
  2. All work must be published or forthcoming in a book or chapbook. Individual publications from journals are not eligible.
  3. We accept submissions of poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and multi-genre books. Longer pieces may be excerpted in the weekly features.
  4. Although there is no restriction on publication date, we prefer works that have been published within the past year.

Submissions

Please forward an electronic copy of the book (PDFs preferred), author bio, and a link to the publisher’s website to wardrobe@sundresspublications.com. In addition, we request that one (1) print copy be mailed to Sundress Academy for the Arts, ATTN: The Wardrobe, 195 Tobby Hollow Lane, Knoxville, TN 37931. (Do let us know if you, for whatever reason, cannot send a print copy.)

Please note that by submitting your publication to The Wardrobe, you thereby imply your permission to reprint from that publication.

All submissions, regardless of whether they are selected for our “Best Dressed” feature, will be linked in a monthly roundup. Submissions to The Wardrobe will remain eligible for “Best Dressed” selection for one (1) year. Hard copies will become a permanent part of the Sundress Academy for the Arts library and be made available for review by our editors and/or affiliate journals.

The Wardrobe‘s Managing Editors are Heather Knox, Jennie Frost, and Erin Elizabeth Smith. Future curators will rotate.

Are you still running the Wardrobe feature? The email address listed does not seem to be working.

I love love love any effort to publish more women, always– but why does it have to be in a separate forum that pulls its title from a clothing reference? Can’t more women just be spotlighted regularly in your usual venues, without the separateness so highlighted?

    • It was supposed to be a play on the name of our organization–Sundress Publications. And women are spotlighted heavily in our usual venues already. This is simply a way to further showcase women writers that aren’t a part of our journals, chapbook series, print series, or anthologies. 🙂

The guidelines say “a selection of work from her published collection.” Does this mean novels are not eligible? Thanks! (Wonderful thing you are doing, in any event.)

  14. I looked at your home page but it appears The Wardrobe is focusing on poetry. Or is there another link I should be looking at to get a sense of the short stories you are spotlighting?

    • We receive mostly poetry submissions, but we do also publish both fiction and nonfiction. You can see some selections from Sybil Baker’s essay collection which was published during the second week in December.
